Walnut Grove holds the Alabama record for the most snow in 24 hours: 20 inches, on March 13, 1993.  The Etowah County town sits about 830 feet above sea level.[1]

U.S. Route 278 passes through, heading east 19 miles to Gadsden and west toward Cullman.  The 2020 census counted 773 residents, a 10.7 percent increase over 2010.[1]

Walnut Grove through the years

  • The town incorporated in 1886 and covers about 5 square miles.[1]

  • Magnesium of a high grade was found nearby in 1917 and mined into the 1940s.[1]

  • From 1884 to 1899, a college preparatory school there served northeast Alabama.[1]
