South of the Coosa River
Southside is in southern Etowah County, 8 to 12 miles south of downtown Gadsden, and the 2020 census counted 9,426 residents. The city is on the south side of the Coosa River in the foothills of the southern Appalachian Mountains.[1]
A small piece of the city extends into Calhoun County, and Southside incorporated in 1957.[1]

Southside's story

People first settled the area in 1850 as a rural community, and the city formed when Green Valley, Cedar Bend and Pilgrims Rest merged.[1]

Green Valley was an early industrial center, with a grist mill, a blacksmith and a sorghum mill.[1]

Etowah County Schools serve the city, which has one elementary school and one high school and shares a middle school with Rainbow City.[1]
