A former coal company town
Sipsey was founded around 1912 and 1913 as a company town for the DeBardeleben Coal Company. Mining started in 1913, and at one point nearly 900 people lived in the settlement.[1]
The town incorporated on August 14, 1965. The 2020 census counted 363 residents, down from 678 in 1980.[1]
