Named for a square mile of school land

Section was first known as Mt.  Zion.  It got its current name from the 16th Section, a square-mile tract the federal government reserved to support public schools.[1]

Pioneers came in large numbers in 1862, and the town incorporated in 1946.  It stands on Sand Mountain at 1,348 feet, northwest of Rainsville and southeast of Scottsboro.[1]

We are open Monday to Thursday, 8 AM to 12 PM and 1 to 5 PM, and Friday from 8 AM to 12 PM.  The office is closed Saturday and Sunday.  Call 256-459-7771 with any questions.
