A river valley town on U.S. 72

Paint Rock is a Jackson County town on the Paint Rock River, in a valley between Keel Mountain and the Cumberland Plateau.  Settlers first called it Camden in the 1820s, the present name came in 1876, and the town incorporated in 1894.[1]

The 2020 census counted just 182 people, the fewest of any of Jackson County's 13 incorporated communities.  Its population once reached 534 in 1910.[1]

  • U.S. Route 72 passes through town, with Scottsboro to the east and Huntsville to the west.[1]

  • The town had a post office by 1836, and a railroad depot followed in 1856.[1]

  • Paint Rock covers 0.44 square miles at roughly 610 feet above sea level.[1]
