A railroad stop that became a town
The town began as Gurley's Tank, a railroad stop for water and coal, and was established in 1891 with about 250 residents. It is named for the Gurley family, who settled there in 1817.[1]
A fire in 1923 destroyed much of the business district, and the Gurley Historic District joined the National Register in 2004. The 2020 census counted 816 residents.[1]
