The Limestone County seat
Athens is the seat of Limestone County and had 25,406 residents in 2020. It was founded in 1818 and incorporated a year before Alabama became a state, which makes it one of the state's oldest incorporated cities.[1]
At 656 feet, it lies on Interstate 65 about halfway between Nashville and Birmingham, and it shares a boundary with Huntsville.[1]
