A courthouse town since 1821
Ashville is one of St. Clair County's two county seats, Pell City being the other, and it had 2,346 residents in the 2020 census. The settlement began as St. Clairsville, then took the name of John Ash, the area's first white settler, who came in 1817.[1]
Ashville became the county seat in 1821 and incorporated in 1822. The present courthouse dates to 1844, and John Ash's log cabin still stands in the center of the city.[1]
