A valley below Altoona Mountain

Altoona is in western Etowah County and extends into Blount County; 948 people lived there in 2020.  The Murphree Valley holds the town at the foot of Altoona Mountain, and Straight Mountain runs through the middle of it.[1]

Coal mining started the community around 1900, and it was named after Altoona, Pennsylvania.  The town was incorporated in 1908.[1]
